What is happening?
Before We Energies can increase how much it charges customers, it must get permission from the Public Service Commission (PSC), a branch of the government. They must explain how much money they need and why. The PSC asks the public and experts for input and decides how much to allow the utility to increase rates.
During 'rate cases' like these, We Energies often makes agreements with organizations that are concerned about the proposal.
What is We Energies asking for?
Increases to gas and electrical rates:
We Energies is claiming this increase is because they are building more clean energy, but they have also announced plans to keep expensive coal plants running. Last year, they announced plans to build a new gas storage facility, even though it was proven that an energy efficiency program would have saved ratepayers money.

It’s Now or Never Madison Rally: August 9, 2022 (MORE...)
Young people with Action for the Climate Emergency hosted a climate rally on Tuesday, August 9th at the WI State Capitol to get Governor Evers to Declare a Climate Emergency!
Tuesday was an important day: with statewide elections growing closer we need to show everyone that Climate Change should be a priority in this state. Who knows if we will have more leaders in office who believe in climate change, or if we have even less. That's why it's Now or Never for Governor Evers to use his powers to declare an emergency. Bring your pots and pans to be loud with us!

About 50 people joined to hear speeches outside the capital building before going inside to demonstrate in the capital rotunda. Then they headed up to Governor Evers' office hoping to get an audience with the governor, but he was out. Finally everyone returned to the Capital steps.
